After graduating, I joined the Army expecting to make the military my career, hoping to be appointed to West Point. Upon the Army learning that I was Sen. Proxmire’s first alternate in 1958, the Army assigned me to the US Military Academy Preparatory School in Ft. Belvoir, Va. After a couple of months at this school filled with army brats, I realized the Army and I were not made for each other. I left the school and was assigned to a combat engineer unit where I finished my enlistment serving as the company clerk for Co. C, 91st Engr. Bn.. Upon finishing my enlistment, I attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where I earned a BS in international relations and an MA in political science. I then attended Michigan State University where I completed all but the dissertation for a doctorate in political science. Instead of completing the degree, I launched my career as a consumer advocate by becoming the first Executive Secretary for the newly created Michigan Consumers Council, a state agency charged with representing consumer interests in the government. I headed the Council’s legislative and research efforts, advocating consumer legislation and promoting consumer education programs for four years. When I left the Council, the Michigan legislature adopted a joint resolution of tribute to acknowledged my achievements. After leaving the Council, I became a consumer advocate for the United Auto Workers. I married Trudy Lieberman, who was then the consumer reported for the Detroit Free Press. In 1976, we moved to New York City where we have lived in Manhattan ever since. After moving here, I first served as a contributing editor for Facts on File, Inc. writing profiles of key political figures for the Nixon/Ford Years. I subsequently authored The Consumer Protection Manual, published by Facts On File, Inc., in 1984, which described consumer protection laws and negotiating strategies consumers could use to enforce their rights under state and federal consumer protection laws. I then worked as a mediator in the NYC Better Business Bureau under its automotive mediation/arbitration program that General Motors had agreed to with the FTC to settle charges they had deceived consumers about three defective components in their cars. In 1987, I became a staff analyst for the NYC Consumer Affairs Department, where I have worked ever since and am now the Director of Legislative Affairs responsible for developing, implementing, and advocating the Department’s City, state and federal legislative programs and preparing and adopting its regulatory agenda. Trudy and I have one daughter, Kirsten Nicole, born in 1985. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from Barnard College in 2007, and is currently working for the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission as an Urban Fellow. She was accepted for a master’s program in Housing, Regeneration and Social Policy at the London School of Economics for next year. Trudy and I have traveled a lot, partake in what NYC has to offer, and enjoy our country house in Pennsylvania where I am building a model railroad. In addition to continuing to oppose the criminal wars of aggression waged by the US around the world since Vietnam and now in Iraq and Afghanistan, I am also writing a manuscript on the OJ Simpson case entitled Proved Innocent: Exposing the Frame Up of OJ Simpson. All in all, it’s been an interesting and rewarding 50 years, and I am looking forward to the reunion.

Hi everybody! How long has it been? After WHS, I graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1962 and married Jon the same week. Two years later he received his MBA from UW. Next a job for him at General Electric kept us near Milwaukee. We had two children, Pete and Cary. Our next move took us to DeKalb, IL. for ten years with GE. Then Jon was transfered to Holland, MI with GE. After a year he began a new position with Prince Corporation (a local company) and I began working for Hope College as Interlibrary Loan Associate. We are still here, in the same house, twenty-five years later. Our son, an engineeer with Mahle, has two lovely children (Joey & Jenny). Our daughter is married and lives in Lansing with her husband. She received her PhD in German and is currently teaching part time at MSU. We are both retired and taking it easy. Jon spends his time golfing while I read and shop for antiques. See you all soon! |

I’m really sad and sorry I can’t attend because of obligations at work. Was hoping to see fellow classmates and hear what they are doing. If you need any info before the event let me know. |

Comment:
I suppose that most people feel their life is defined by family and work, so I will begin with that. My daughter Ronnie graduated from UW-Whitewater with a master's degree and currently is an administrative assistant at a Milwaukee area hospital pharmacy. My son Jeff attended UW-Madison and currently is the owner/operator of a bakery called Cress Springs Bakery in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin. He specializes in a variety of sourdough breads made in a large wood-fired brick oven. You can buy his bread at the Saturday farmer's market on the Capital Square in Madison. You are in for a treat if you do! I have three terrific granddaughters. They love being on, in, or near the water. Tragically, we lost a grandson in childbirth. Since leaving high school and attending college in Indiana I have worked at a variety of jobs, but mostly as a carpenter. My most interesting job in that field was as a ship's carpenter at a boatyard on Jones Island in Milwaukee. I was also elected Alderman for four terms in the City of Muskego. Through the years my avocation has mostly involved environmental work. I was a founder of the Little Muskego Lake Association, a founding board member of Gathering Waters in Madison, and the founder and current land manager for the Muskego Lakes Conservancy. I also enjoy Indycar Racing, canoeing, hiking, metal detecting, the Packers, stained glass work, and collecting Indian art and artifacts. When I am not busy here in Muskego I enjoy spending time on our acreage in Bayfield County overlooking the Apostle Islands. So there you have it. Where the hell has the time gone?!! |

In that year we went to Taiwan, where we served at a Chinese Lutheran High School. After returning 11 years later, I taught missions and outreach courses at Concordia University, St. Paul MN from 1997 to 2006., when I retired. We then moved to Colorado. After graduating from Waukesha High School, I went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for two years and then moved to Milwaukee and graduated from Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. I met my husband, Dr. Burton Friedman, while in school and we married after my graduation and his intership completion in 1963. He went on to train in cardiology in Philadelphia where we lived for two years. I worked as a head hurse in an intensive care unit at Riddle Hospital in Media, PA. We then moved back to Milwaukee where we have resided for the past 43 years. We had 3 daughters in five years and I went back to school once they were in school. I obtained a BA degree in psychology from Cardinal Stritch College and a MS degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from UW-Milwaukee in 1984. I worked as a nurse case manager for Intracorp (Cigna) for 21 years. I have since retired and we are lucky to spend at least six months a year in AZ. All three of our daughters graduated from college, married and we have five grand-children. We feel truly blessed and are grateful for this time in our life. My husband and I plan to attend the reunion and are looking forward to seeing everyone. Waukesha High School was a great time for me and I have many happy memories. Anne (Ziggy) |

Comment:
When I was a kid, life at home was not all that wonderful. Instead of pot or alcohol my drug of choice was books; I was the best customer that the Waukesha public Library had. So it wasn't a big surprise that I decided to join the army right after high school. I was not quite 17 1/2 years old. I hated the army but it did teach me electronics which led to my ultimate career as an electrical engineer. I went to electronics school in New Jersey, then to guided missile school in Alabama. After that was a bunch of short assignments, leading up to two very boring years at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland. After getting out of the army, I started at UW-Milwaukee and did my first two years of engineering, then I transferred to the wonderful campus at Madison and finished. One of the Professors suggested that Bell Laboratories had a wonderful graduate program, so I interviewed there and accepted an offer. Part of the deal was a year at UC-Berkeley in California in 1966 and 1967. It was the ”Summer of love" across the Bay in San Francisco, and I had a great time getting a master's degree. I went to work at Bell Labs in Illinois and acquired a wife and adopted her two children. That marriage lasted for about 11 years before I got divorced, quit my job, and took a position in Saudi Arabia doing systems engineering for the Aramco corporate communications system. This was during the oil boom right after the revolution in Iran. When the oil boom trailed off and the price of oil went down, I was laid off. I came back to the United States, bought a large touring motorcycle (a KZ1100, which is how I got my login name), and I toured the western United States for several months. I came back to Illinois and accepted a position with my old employer, Bell Labs. I remarried in 1989 which lasted for another 11 years. Hmmm … do you suppose there is a pattern here? I loved my job, but didn't enjoy working so much in a new environment -- the old Bell Labs was almost a collegiate environment, whereas the new one was much more industrial. Welcome to the real world, Dave. In 2001 was encouraged to retire by a bonus in my pension. I was skeptical about retirement, but after seven years of it I think it is a good gig to sit on your butt, do what you want, and collect checks to do it. I have been investing a lot of time in the 50th reunion of Waukesha South High School; after the reunion on what have to find someplace to fill my time. Maybe I'll write a book. All in all, I’m a happy person; much happier than I was as a teenager. I have a huge Harley-Davidson which I use to ride all over the USA in the summertime, and I spend a lot of time doing digital photography and messing around with my computer. Life is good. |
